INSANITY PLAYLIST FOR END OF WINTER 08 TERM!

Well, Seb flaked out on us and had to go skanking in Shoreditch, so the Magnanamous G had to fill his empty boots on this, the last show of the term, and indeed the year. It's been a pleasure thus far and we can only hope to fry your minds more thoroughly next year (once that lovely loan comes through and we can buy every record on Berwick Street again...).

INSANITY PLAYLIST 7/12/08

Here we go again. All kindsa fun, all kindsa mischeif... African, Ethiopian, Spanish, Latin, Brazilian, Jamaican, American. Continental hits with the eternal crate diggin' musical protagonists (nice one, Matthias!). HEAR THIS:

Reggie Stepper - Cu-Oonuh: Awesome dancehall cut. Jump up style all over!
Merry Clayton - Southern Man: This Neil Young classic takes on an extra layer of poigniancy here as Merry Clayton turns it into a huge Soul epic.
Rex Lawson - Yellow Sisi: Slice from Highlife Time, a collection of Nigerian fusion songs. The point at which western rock n roll hits African roots. Soaked in warmth and rhythm (our favourite musical term!).
Clinic - Tomorrow: Bringing their own brand of bluesy rhythmic folk tonight, from their new 10 inch on Domino Records. Watch out for the funky DFA remix on the flip...
Mock And Toof - Digit One: Thick slab from the Digit EP (definate favourite) on RVNG records (track it down! 2 ace punk funk reworks and screenprint sleeve). Throbbing minimal disco beat with horns and a wild eastern chant.
Ice - La Grande Guerre: A loveable angsty slice of twee electro pop from early eighties France.
!!! - Heart Of hearts: BIG punk funk anthem from one of the best live bands we've seen. The thinking mans alternative to Scissor Sisters. But with way way more (talented, authentic and fun) sass, sex and irresistable bass lines.
Steve Reid Ensemble - Lugano: Tastey slice of modern jazz from the legend that is Steve Reid, accompanied by the best in young european jazz talent.
Louie Ramirez - Do It Any Way You Wanna: PURE FILTH. We dig mojo, Soul Jazz serve it up hot and loose, track from New York Latin Hustle, once again, mmm...0
Memphis Black - That's Me Boy: "Look at that girl!...ain't she beautiful...kinda sexy too!" Weird and wonderful groovey organ led banger from deepest darkest Germany, 1969.
Bola Johnson & His Easy Life And His Easy Life Top beats Buroda Mase: More highlife, this recording post Biafran war, when the halls of Nigeria were becomming infiltrated with jazz and funk. So this is where Jazzanova and Scruff get it!
Mar Revolto - Contendas de Sincorá: Warm, woozey folk from the dreamy landscape of 1970s Brazil.
Cutty Ranks - Chop Chop: Quick stepper perfect for the dance. Hands up reggae for those that like it a little agressive.
Unit 4+2 - 3.30am: A sensitive psychedelic ballad, from the late sixites. Check that keyboard line...
El Guincho - Fata Morgana: Spanish stomper that goes over and over and over until you spin and throw yr hands up and all the lights go funny. Band of the year! Hit Young Turks for the LP.
Gang Gang Dance - Bebey: Glitchy and rhythmic opener from the new Gang Gang Dance record. Believe the hype, this album slays!
Aselefetch Ashine And Getenesh Kebret - Amlak Abet Abet: Nuts track from deppest Ethiopia on Ethiopian Soul And Groove (awesome Ethiopique comp). Essential for crate diggers or explorers of the musical unknown. Yes!
Los Salvajes - Al Capone: Furious blues punk jam from Spain's premier 60s beat group. Liberating kids across Europe with sound and it still feels fresh.
The Je Nes Sais Quoi - Death Of Them - Good time punk 'n roll from somewhere in Northern Europe. Bought from a European distro, loveley rare screen printed seven perfect for DIY geeks. Who knows if these guys are still playing. Who cares. Four hit EP that sinks into underground rock n roll history...

The Miracle Workers - Waiting: Obscure garage punk from somewhere in mid-Western America.
SEB
Wooden Shjips - Shrinking Moon For You: From their Volume One collection of limited 7s and rarities, racing out of the speakers like a tidal wave of noise and pure rock and roll energy, noise like the Earth's crust and groove like a Pacific chasm, this is Wooden Shjips...
The Heads - Handler Med Jonesie: ...Whose gigantic feedback overdrive sinks into the low end propulsion of The Heads, straight from the two band's split tour seven. We sail into fuzzzzzzy seas on a small wooden raft praying for absoloute noise.
White Light Circus - Marching Orders (Special Mix): Another Nu-Disco stomper from White Light Circus, I played the B side last week now this is the main-course...
Chromeo - Destination Overdrive (DFA Remix) - DFA slay this one. Techy broken version of the bootyful origanal, classic example of rippin' it up and starting again.
Arcadion - Arc: More DC records madness, this track just keeps on chugging away all wonky synths and driving beats while the Northern Lights play out in your ears.
CSS - Lets Make Love And Listen To Death From Above (Spank Rock Remix): Indie hit gone disco. Blissful!
Pinch - Punisher (Loefah's SE25 Mix): "Check your bass bins mate!"
Ini Kamoze - World In A Music: classic riddim. Played it last week, couldn't resist. "When riddim is spacing out your head"...

(We played Skream's Skreamism 5 on the way out - finishing the blog, packing our bags, turning out the lights.)
